Meet the Presiding Bishop-Elect and her family
The Rt. Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, ninth Bishop of Nevada, began a new life on Sunday, June 18 — a life in which her face, and her name, are suddenly familiar to people across the Church, the nation, and yes, the world. The first woman to be nominated for the office of Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church was elected on the fifth ballot to be the 26th Presiding Bishop-elect. She will be instituted as Presiding Bishop and Primate on Nov. 4 at Washington National Cathedral. more...

Archbishop of Canterbury and Presiding Bishop Griswold speak to 'Challenge and Hope for the Anglican Communion'
(ACNS) The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Rowan Williams, has set out his thinking on the future of the Anglican Communion in a theological reflection entitled “The Challenge and Hope of Being an Anglican Today, a Reflection for the Bishops, Clergy and Faithful of the Anglican Communion” which has been sent to the Primates with a covering letter. In it Dr. Williams says that the strength of the Anglican tradition has been in maintaining a balance between the absolute priority of the Bible, a catholic loyalty to the sacraments, and a habit of cultural sensitivity and intellectual flexibility. It is also available as an audio on the Internet. more...

Pastoral Letter following the 2006 General Convention
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Several months ago we entered the cloud and fog of not knowing together when I allowed my name to be considered as a candidate for Presiding Bishop. Now that the General Convention has concluded, some of the cloud and fog has dissipated. That, for me at least, is a great relief. But some of the cloud and fog remains for this church we love, which reminds us that God will reveal Godself when and how God chooses, not as we choose. For now, just as surely as God has revealed some things to us, God also asks us to continue to bear the uncertainty as to other things. more...

Archbishop of Canterbury addresses General Synod on the Anglican Communion
Lambeth Palace has released a copy of the address delivered by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams, at the Church of England’s General Synod meeting in York on July 7. While noting that the results of the “complex process” of General Convention are “predictably less than clear,” the Archbishop praised both Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold and “his successor-elect” for invoking their personal authority to make sure that there was “some degree of recognizable response to the recommendations of the Windsor Report.” more...

'Heartlands of Anglicanism' - Archbishop of Cape Town Promotes Middle Ground
The Archbishop of Cape Town has written to the Primates of the Anglican Communion issuing a strong call to uphold the ‘broad rich heartlands of our Anglican heritage.’ He argues that this must be ‘the territory on which we debate our future.’ He adds ‘it is not something to be fought out at the limits of conservatism or liberalism, as if they were the only possibilities before us.’ more...

[ENS, York, England] Ending centuries of tradition, the Church of England voted to welcome and affirm “the view of the majority of the House of Bishops that admitting women to the episcopate in the Church of England is consonant with the faith of the Church” after a two-hour debate July 8 during the Church’s General Synod, meeting at York University, England. more...

Reflection - Lessons from the Sisters of Dianbai
The nine little girls ranged in age from just-turned-two to 15. They were brought to the Fort Mitchell Best Western by nine sets of parents, including two single moms and a couple of blended families. Five adolescent brothers, a male computer devotee’ and two teen-age older sisters rounded out the crowd. They had come from Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky to a Midwest reunion of “sisters of Dianbai” – children who had been adopted from the same orphanage in the Guandong Province of China, on the South China Sea. more...

Editor's Corner
The post-convention issue of The Advocate is jam-packed with reports about the triennial business meeting of our Church, our new Presiding Bishop-elect and her family, and relationships with the Anglican Communion. We are going down to the wire on news regarding words from the Archbishop of Canterbury and other Primates, and responses from our own Bishop and clergy. Once again, we would like to remind you that you can get your most complete and truthful information regarding these issues from official Episcopal resources. The Episcopal News Service and the Diocese of Lexington Web sites both regularly post documents received from the Archbishop in full. Be aware that a number of Web sites, newspaper articles and paid ads are providing partial information, i.e. a portion of a complex sentence which gives the impression that the Archbishop is saying one thing, when the complete sentence gives a very different meaning; inferences about convention legislation that contain partial truths; predictions of decisions by the Archbishop when he has clearly stated that there is an orderly process for decision making that will be followed. We encourage you to read these documents in full, along with the legislative summary and other pertinent pieces of factual information that will allow you to form your own opinions. Your elected deputies have each provided insights from their experience, as has your Bishop. You have told us that you read the pre-convention issue cover-to-cover, and were able to follow convention proceedings in the light of good information. Our efforts are to continue to provide you the facts of the life of our Church as we continue our path toward reconciliation in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. —KCM
