What’s really at stake (and it certainly isn’t sex)
Why Sex Is a Complicating Factor but Not the Real Issue Sex sells in America. One particular commercial comes to mind. It involves a woman shampooing her hair in an airplane restroom while making incredibly suggestive sounds that are heard to the great shock of everyone else on the flight. What does sex have to do with buying shampoo? Nothing, of course. The Church is learning the hard way what advertisers learned long ago. Sex sells because it pushes decision making from our most rational capacities to our most visceral ones. more...

A General Convention Retrospective 1967 – 2006
Unity in diversity despite continual rumors of division General Convention. The triennial meeting of the Episcopal Church which is known by this abbreviated title is the regular business meeting of our branch of the Anglican Communion, a branch that itself comprises 38 provinces around the world, including Central America, Taiwan, and some parts of Europe and the South Pacific. Over the years, it has taken on many of the hallmarks of an “event.” Some people refer to it fondly as a gigantic family reunion; others, less fondly, as a political gathering. more...

Clouds and Fog
My lifelong love of flying, which turns out to be a very good thing for a bishop to have, began when my parents took me to Tampa to visit friends. I was six.
What I remember about that trip was my excitement about flying for the first time. What I was most excited about was seeing the tops of the clouds. I had gotten it in my head that up there, on the other side of the clouds, I would see angels. more...

Introduction to the 2006 General Convention
With few precedents for a republican form of church governance, the fi rst General Convention met in 1785 in Philadelphia. That convention began work on a constitution and a revision of the Book of Common Prayer, the church’s book of worship. Within ten years the General Convention had agreed on its form of governance and its pattern of worship, both of which endure to the present day. more...

What is a General Convention deputy…and what isn’t
“A deputy is a person who is elected by their diocese to vote their own mind when they are at General Convention,” explained Bonnie Anderson, Chair of the Diocese of Michigan deputation. “They are elected by their diocese because their diocese trusts them to attend all the General Convention legislative sessions, to research and understand the legislation that they are voting on, to engage in prayer and worship about their decisions and the decisions that they are going to make, to talk to other people in an exploratory way about the decisions that are going to be made, and to pray for the intervention of the Holy Spirit.” more...

Theology at bat: thoughts from a t-ball game
The Sand Gnats dress out in green and white, with a pink helmet and pink shoe laces here and there distinguishing female from male batters. The Lug Nuts wear red and white, accented by their own touches of pink. The tallest players are rising first graders; the smallest are “underclass person” pre-schoolers swallowed up by too-big caps which slide over their faces, and too long pants which meet their shoes. The two teams meet for t-ball battle on one of the playing fields at Ecton Park. Cheering them on from the bleachers are moms, dads, brothers, sisters, grandparents, friends and pets. more...

Editor's Corner
The May-June issue of The Advocate is a special edition that is intended to inform our readership about the upcoming General Convention of the Episcopal Church in Columbus, Ohio, June 13-21. It could be said that the jam-packed issue is symbolic of the jam-packed meeting of our Church! You will find news articles about the business of convention, a centerfold highlighting our Convention deputies and Triennial delegates, news commentary on some of the issues before convention, and a retrospective of the past quarter of a century of conventions which provides an overview to how the Episcopal Church has studied, discussed and acted on the business of our Church in the recent past. Our “Mission and Ministry” pages highlight parish and diocesan life. It is our hope that each Episcopal household will read, digest and save for reference this document about the common life of our Church — the larger faith community of which we are all a part. The July-August issue will provide post-convention insights from our Bishop, our deputation and hopefully, from some of the many visitors who will be driving to Columbus to experience something of this triennial meeting. Story boards of the history of General Convention will be on display at Mission House throughout the summer. Come see them, your diocesan offices and staff. —KCM

The Box Rebellion
I can’t find my shoes. And the sugar bowl has gone missing also. We are in the final days of packing to move to our new house.
