Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori headlines Diocesan Convention Feb.25-27
The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori, Presiding Bishop and Primate of the Episcopal Church, will be the keynote speaker for the 114th Convention of the Diocese of Lexington and celebrant and preacher for the Convention Eucharist Feb.25-27

The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori,
Presiding Bishop and Primate of the Episcopal Church, will be the keynote speaker for the 114th Convention of the Diocese of Lexington and celebrant and preacher for the
Convention Eucharist. Non-deputies who wish to attend the
keynote address or closing Eucharist may do so on a space-available
basis, or if they wish to receive materials and attend meals and sessions, may register as “other” at the full registration fee. Registration forms are available at www.diolex.org under the Convention menu.
It will be a paper-less convention, with deputy packets e-mailed to a
pre-tested address from registration forms. Anyone who does not have
access to e-mail may request a packet of materials, which will be mailed
to them for the cost of printing and postage ($5).
The agenda is classified as “tentative,” awaiting final confirmation
from the Presiding Bishop’s Office closer to the Convention date.
There is a proposed meeting with clergy on Thursday, with an Opening
Evensong to be held at Good Shepherd, Lexington, in celebration of
African American History Month. Deputies will gather for business
sessions at the Marriott at Griffin Gate on Friday morning; the keynote
address by the Presiding Bishop will be at 1 p.m. Visitors will be seated
in a special visitors’ section, space available. The Convention dinner
and entertainment will be held on Friday evening at the Marriott.
At the conclusion of business around mid-day on Saturday, the
convention will move to The Old Episcopal Burying Ground on the
corner of Third and Elm Tree Lane in north Lexington, where a tent
which will accommodate 600 worshippers will welcome deputies and visitors to the Closing Eucharist, where Bishop Jefferts Schori will celebrate and preach.

The location for the Eucharist was chosen to celebrate the life and ministry of London Ferrell, the
only African American buried in The Old Episcopal Burying Ground. A Baptist pastor who
was born into slavery, freed in Virginia and moved to Kentucky, he and Bishop Benjamin
Bosworth Smith stayed in Lexington to minister during the cholera epidemic. Following the
Eucharist, a reception will be held for the community at Mission House.
The Marriott at Griffin Gate will be the site of the 2010 Convention. A block of rooms
will be held at the group rate of $94 until Feb. 11. Rooms will NOT be available at the group
rate after that time. Deputations are urged to make their reservations as soon as possible by
calling 1-800-228-9290 and identifying themselves as with the Convention of the Episcopal
Diocese of Lexington.
Complete details, media packet and proposed agenda will be available on the web site in
December.
